NYU standoff ends in a “poof”
Amid demonstrators banging on plastic drums fashioned from paint buckets, the mood was more comedy show than serious civil disobedience at a student takeover of NYU’s Kimmel Center cafeteria demanding fiscal transparency from the administration. There were jumping jacks, and fists pumping incessantly in the air. The actual protesters were outnumbered by curiosity seekers, press and police officers. At one point, one of the remaining holdouts curiously asked the crowd below through a megaphone, “What time is it?” Perhaps it was because NYU had turned off the electricity and their cell phone batteries had died. They had gone as far, only hours earlier, to declare through a megaphone, “We own this balcony, and we will find a way to be heard, even if they shut down our Internet and electricity - we will be heard!”
