Developer Looks to Supersize Meatpacking Development

347-51 West 13th Street sits at the northwest corner of Washington Street in the ever more fashionable Meatpacking District. These old meat market buildings with classic Art Deco features and awnings extend from Washington Street to under the High Line. These buildings were supposed to be included in the City’s Gansevoort Market Historic District, which would have preserved them in perpetuity, but the owner argued vociferously against designation and was able to convince the City to remove them from the proposed district. They are however included in the State and National Register Gansevoort Market Historic District, which does not prohibit demolition, but provides tax and other incentives for building preservation and rehabilitation.
