City Council Bill Could Mean More Billboards and Sidewalk Sheds In Our Neighborhood

A sidewalk shed with illegal advertising billboard; Intro. 623 would make such signs legal, and likely commonplace, in many areasIn late January, with very little notice, the City Council’s Housing and Buildings Committee held a hearing on a bill which could have a substantial impact upon neighborhoods like the West and Central Village, Meatpacking District, Hudson Square, SoHo, NoHo, and Union Square. The bill would, for the first time ever, legalize advertising billboards on sidewalk sheds (scaffoldings) in certain parts of the city, with a permit fee paid to the City.

Developer Looks to Supersize Meatpacking Development

Another Historic Building Succumbs to Developers Fervor. This low 19th century building which helps give the meatpacking district its inviting charm is slated for a 15 story high rise.347-51 West 13th Street sits at the northwest corner of Washington Street in the ever more fashionable Meatpacking District. These old meat market buildings with classic Art Deco features and awnings extend from Washington Street to under the High Line. These buildings were supposed to be included in the City’s Gansevoort Market Historic District, which would have preserved them in perpetuity, but the owner argued vociferously against designation and was able to convince the City to remove them from the proposed district. They are however included in the State and National Register Gansevoort Market Historic District, which does not prohibit demolition, but provides tax and other incentives for building preservation and rehabilitation.
